Monday

I decided to host a preschool at my house every week. This week we are doing "About me" activities, although I will definitely have to disclose to my friends that we are all sick with a coldso they have "full disclosure" before they come.

And I planted 20ish daylilies in my front flower garden. I guess there go all plans to till that soil next year. Unless I just...do it anyway. I also moved the dying oregano and the happyish thyme to the main garden, which I might regret if it spreads like crazy. But there isn't enough time for it to REALLY spread, and I put them close to the strawberries, which I'm going to try to overwinter. Maybe these herbs will also overwinter.

These homemade calzones were really delicious. Someone on facebook asked me for the recipe and I ended up posting four comments in a row, which is kind of tacky.

  • Kate Challis I just sort of made it up. Make a bread dough. Roll it out and put a mixture of mozzarella cheese, cooked ground beef and onions, pepperoni, spinach, chopped tomatoes, and basil. I think tomato sauce prevents the dough from rising as much as I would prefer. I put an egg wash on the top and sprinkled it with garlic powder

  • Kate Challis Garlic salt, not garlic powder. But that would probably be good, too.

  • Kate Challis My bread recipe is really, really flexible. I haven't been measuring. Leonardo-Kami Rasmussen Latorre and Amy King Milletttaught me how to make bread in a hands on way, and it has been very useful. It is less about measuring than judging the consistency you have, which can vary depending on lots of things like room temp and humidity. My bread recipe is very very similar to my kolache dough recipe, except that is even better with nutmeg and lemon rind while those things taste a little weird in a pbj sandwich or calzone.

  • Kate Challis My bread recipe involves flour, yeast, salt, water, powdered milk, eggs (or in this case, powdered eggs cuz we are all out), gluten (this time I forgot to add that), sugar or honey, and sometimes whatever else is around like extra oatmeal from breakfast etc.

Here's the progress on the Irish Chain I've been making. I think it will be awesome.

Lest ye think I did not spend time with my kids today - I did. I took them to the library. I read to them. I took them across the street to our friend's house for a little bit. And they all got to play a lot because I was feeling really crummy. I also realized (DUH) that they are also feeling pretty crummy, which would explain a lot of the really awful behavior issues recently.
