January Dresses and other things
Well, I totally failed my goal of writing a post every week. However, I also wasn't able to start any of my fitness goals until the beginning of this month, when I was 6 weeks postpartum. At least, that's my excuse. So, this year instead of being January 1st, it's February 1st. For feeling the pressure to get things done. Self induced pressure. That I am really good at self inducing :)
And boy do I ever have goals! I really, really do. I want to be an awesome bloggeragain, among other things. Although, it's not really that high on my actual internal priority list.
But this is internal monologue is not really what I wanted to spend my precious nap hours writing. I want to share some of the neat crochet projects Ifinished worked on in January!
First, here's baby Cora Madeline:
And the dress I crocheted for her! This is the back.
This is the front.
Here's the dress I STARTED for her. With way too big of a needle. And way too large of thread. So it ended up for her 6 month old cousin in Provo.
And then I wanted to experiment with sleeves. So here is the sweater I crocheted for her other cousin.
Jane got glasses!
John is obsessed with Batman.
This is that night we ate fondu.
Cora again!

January Capsule Wardrobe
I want to look good. Part of that goal is definitely going to involve a lot of sweat and effort, since I just had my baby 3 weeks ago. Another very different part of that goal has to do with style.
I enjoy clothes. One roadblock to me wearing fashionable clothing tends to be that I like to "save" my clothes. I find something that looks awesome and keep it in my closet, untouched, because I want to have it. It's dumb. My sisters in law have a much better attitude - wearing the piece out of the store!
Another major roadblock has been that nothing fits me right now. I recently came up with a potential solution to this problem while browsing pinterest. (I tend to get a lot of netflix/amazon prime instant video/pinterest/facebook time now that I am breastfeeding a baby who likes to eat every 1-3 hours.) What is it, you ask? The Capsule Wardrobe.
Basically, the idea is less clothing that all (or almost all) matches. It's the idea of being intentional about your clothes. This kind of planning has proved to be extremely effective for me in the kitchen; why not the closet also?
First step: I researched it online. That was fun. I always have fun researching over-researching my interests online. Then, I purged my closet. What isn't in the donate pile went into three large boxes. As I lose weight, I will be "rewarded" with being able to open these boxes and add some of my old clothes to my wardrobe. This means I only kept out the clothes that actually fit my body right now. Only 3 maternity items made the cut, and they are all long t-shirts that don't look that maternity-ish on me. My nursing self is very big-bosomed, so long t-shirts fit me much, much better. Also, my mom bought me a TON of clothes, which was extremely generous of her. And finally, I made a pretty collage on polyvore.
When I picked out my outfit today, I didn't have to think as much. It felt great. My top matched my pants, and the whole thing looks great. Not that I'm going anywhere, with a high of -6 outside!
It turns out that there are a few pieces left for me to finish my January wardrobe. I am pretty sure I will end up spending less doing my wardrobe this way than I would binge-shopping. I imagine it is the same principle as, "don't go to the grocery store without a list." This is my list. It's so cool to arrange it in polyvore; I can really SEE how things coordinate! Granted, I will probably spend more than I have in the past 9 months, because I wasn't interested in buying clothes while pregnant. But I'm worth it.

Daniel Simkins' Journey to America
My fifth great grandfather is Charles Simkins.

From a story posted on familysearch, I learned that he married a woman named Rachel Hawthorne. They joined the LDS church and were making preparations to immigrate when Rachel suddenly died in 1849. Supposedly this left Charles Simkins with eight sons, however, familysearch only shows that the following children were living at the time:

Daniel Simkins (1832-1883) he would have been 17 when his mother died

Hezekiah Simkins (1837-1916)
Joseph Simkins (1842-1925)
The family most likely traveled to Utah in the Thomas Marsden Company, departing 4 June 1852.

In the story, supposedly, "It was decided that the father and the small boys were to go first and the older boys were to stay in England until the father could send enough money for them.
In the meantime, the older ones procured work and so the family was separated for a time. Finally, after careful planning and work, the family was reunited in America. They crossed the plains just as they could, working their way through, the father keeping the young boys with him."
Notice that there are only six living children, and one is a daughter. Daniel Simkins, my fourth great grandfather, apparently did not go on the trek with the rest of the family.
Neither, apparently, did Charles Simkin's new wife Elisabeth Johnson, who had married him only ~9 months earlier on 30 September 1851.
The Thomas Marsden Company left for Utah in June 1852. This is the approximate marriage year of Daniel Simkins to Susan Gale in St. Louis, Missouri. An exact date has not yet been found.
Missouri, Marriages, 1750-1920 showed no results for Daniel Sim[p]kins or Susan Gale ~1852
All Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 showed no marriage results for Daniel Sim[p]kins to Susan Gale, however there is a clear record of his marriage to Ellen Howard. More on that in a bit.
Searching for the death of Susan Gale Sim[p]kins in the following databases gave no results:

I do not believe that Daniel Simkins married Susan Gale in St. Louis Missouri. Perhaps the couple was married in England, and that is why Daniel did not come immediately to the United States with the rest of his family, although as of now, I still have no proof that the family journeyed across the Atlantic together. Perhaps the couple was married somewhere else before they got to St. Louis.
The 1850 census shows that Daniel Simkins was living in the home of James Simkins with Rachel, Daniel's 3 year old niece, and Charles, his 15 year old younger brother. They were in St. Louis at this time. It appears that he was not yet married at this time.
In the Utah, Familysearch, Early Church Information File, 1830-1900 which is only available by browsing entries, I found the following:

So, back to that second marriage to Ellen Howard. Yes, he married her on 31 May 1856; and then she divorced him on 2 March 1857. See the following:

Here is a link to the death certificate of Rachel Simpkins Jones. It appears that this person was actually James' daughter, and thus Charles' granddaughter.
Here is a bio about her on familysearch. This bio says that she was born 3 November 1844 at "Nutun, Lee Willows, Lan Shire, England" [sic] to James Simkins and Jane Kirkbride. It also says that her parents sailed to America (this is corroborated by the Mormon Migration website, which lists them on the ship "Erin's Queen" leaving from Liverpool to New Orleans on 7 September 1848) and made their home in St. Louis, where her mother died in childbirth. Her sisters had also died, and so James and Rachel were left alone to travel to Utah. Except, they weren't exactly alone; they traveled with her uncles and grandfather Charles Simkins.
Aaaand...if you followed that...here's a brief timeline to make things easier:

6 November 1848 - James and his family arrive in St. Louis where he probably got employment and they stayed for the winter

11 March 1850 - Daniel and Charles arrive in New Orleans
24 March 1850 - probably Daniel and Charles arrive in St. Louis, where they probably are united with their brother James

What I'm interested in finding out is the following:
Why did Daniel Simpkins leave Utah?
When exactly did he leave?
Who did he marry? (Mary Tait?)
Who are the parents of his California spouse?
Did he ever return to visit his daughter?
Did he remain a faithful Latter-day Saint? Was he disillusioned with the LDS church? Were his motives for moving to California centered on gold?
Why do several sources seem to indicate he died in Idaho?
Did he really die in 1883, or is that incorrect?
